2022 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin Sport Bike Review
2022 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin Sport Bike Review. The CRF1000L is a 998 cc parallel-twin dual-sport that revived the Africa Twin name for the 2016 model year. It became available in the UK in late 2015 and early 2016 in the US. It was developed as a modern interpretation of its predecessors, the XRV 750 and XRV 650, based on the NXR-750 which won the Paris-Dakar rally four times in the late 1980s. The original V-twin Africa Twin was first sold in Europe from 1988 until the late 2003 production year but was never brought to the United States. The CRF1000L has also been seen as a response by Honda to heavier adventure touring motorcycles such as the BMW R1200GS, Ducati Multistrada, and Triumph Tiger Explorer with more off-road focused engines.
Automatic dual-clutch transmission
In a first for this category, the Africa Twin has the option to evolve Honda’s automatic dual-clutch transmission (DCT) technology, which remains unique to Honda in motorcycles. This latest DCT evolution has been developed and programmed specifically to provide off-road capability.
The first confirmation of the new Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin Sport Bike came in June 2014 when Honda filed a patent for an externally mounted airbox configuration that would allow for a slimmer and lower mounted fuel tank in future dual sport motorcycles. This improves off-road handling by allowing the rider to slide further forward into turns without being hindered by a wider fuel tank with a higher center of gravity.
After EICMA revealed, Honda began releasing a series of videos titled “True Adventure” documenting the history of the Africa Twins winning the Paris-Dakar rally in the 1980s in anticipation of the release of a new true adventure.
Features of Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin
- 1084cc TWIN-CYLINDER ENGINE
The CRF1100L Africa Twin sports one of the best engines ever on an adventure bike. The parallel-twin design is narrow, and delivers torque everywhere from idle to redline. You’ll have more low grunts, and easy sailing on the open road.
- PARALLEL-TWIN MACHINE LAYOUT
The Africa Twin’s parallel-twin engine layout makes the bike shorter from front to back. That means the front wheels can tuck closer to the engine, shortening the wheelbase and making the bike more agile off road and on pavement.
- TWIN INTAKES
The Africa Twin uses a unique twin air intake design with two vertical filtration elements. All that clean air helps the engine deliver excellent performance, even in prolonged operation in dusty conditions.
- UNICAM MACHINE DESIGN
Honda’s exclusive Unicam® engine design helps us provide the Africa Twin with a compact cylinder head for optimal engine placement. But the engine also benefits from superior performance, thanks to the entire cylinder-head layout. This is the best of both worlds!
- COMPACT DUAL-CATALYZER muffler
Using the same valve muffler technology as our CBR1000RR Superbike, the new Africa Twins exhaust silencers help lower emissions while highlighting ridability and power output.
- CRUISE CONTROL
This is one of the worst kept secrets in the motorcycle world — the Honda Africa Twins make great long-distance touring bikes. To that end, we’ve equipped our Africa Twin models with cruise control, just like our Gold Wings. Your next adventure really starts a few hundred miles away? No problem!
- THROTTLE WITH WIRE
Our throttle-by-wire system greatly extends the flexibility of the Africa Twin. First, you get Honda’s seven levels of Selectable Torque Control. Second, you can choose from four power delivery modes: Tour, Urban, Gravel, and a fourth user-programmable one. First used on our RC213V-S, throttle-by-wire is an excellent example of how Honda’s technology works for you.
- 270 DEGREE PHASE CRANK
Most twins use a 180 degree crank. With Africa Twin phasing at 270 degrees, you get unique power delivery that is easy to modulate, especially on terrain where traction is challenging.
- SELECTABLE ABS
Our 2021 Africa Twin model offers two ABS settings: on-road and off-road. A third setting lets you turn off the rear ABS altogether for riding on the ground.
- ANTI-LOCK BRAKES RUNNING
Africa Twin’s Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) comes standard integrated with a 6-axis IMU, knows when you’re leaning, and compensates accordingly.
- DRY-SUMP ENGINE
The Africa Twin’s dry-sump engine design is the only way to go. A more compact sump increases ground clearance and eliminates the vulnerability of conventional wet sumps.
- LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY, COMPACT MASS
By finding With heavy components such as batteries as close to the bike’s center of gravity as possible, and using a compact engine, the Africa Twin provides a superior platform for excellent handling.
- WATER PUMP
Can you see the Africa Twin water pump? Trick questions! It’s tucked behind the right side cover, out of harm’s way. No vulnerable hoses leading to it either, a drawback on some bikes. Driven by a balancing shaft, in the case of tip-overs or in rocky sections, it’s one less thing to worry about.
- LIGHTWEIGHT LITHIUM-ION BATTERY
Conventional batteries are notoriously heavy – that’s why we gave the Africa Twin a high-tech lightweight lithium-ion battery. Compared to similar lead-acid batteries, it holds a charge of about four times longer, and its shelf life is 1.6 times longer. Plus, it’s much lighter.
- Apple CarPlay
Apple CarPlay seamlessly integrates your compatible iPhone into your new Africa Twin. That means you can use iPhone to easily access Apple Maps, Apple Music, and other services. You’ll have access to the weather, playlists and phone numbers while on board. The available Bluetooth enabled wireless headset lets you communicate easier than ever. And best of all, with more apps available every day, Apple CarPlay keeps technology and your bike’s comfort on the cutting edge.
- TFT TOUCH SCREEN
The Africa Twins have a 6.5-inch touch panel LCD multi-information dashboard display. You can choose between three displays as well, depending on how much information you want to view at once. This screen also allows Africa Twin to offer integrated Apple CarPlay.
- SIX-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION
The Africa Twin has a conventional six-speed manual gearbox with a clutch lever mounted on the handlebars. It’s a proven and tough design that’s a little lighter too.
- OPTIONAL ALUMINUM LUGGAGE
Our optional three-piece hard luggage is sure to become one of your favorite accessories. All three bags have weather-resistant liners, and the top box is large enough to hold a full face helmet. And all three boxes use the same locking lock as well.
- LARGE FUEL TANK
Our Africa Twin and Africa Twin DCT have an 18.8 liter (5.0 gallon) fuel tank, while our two Adventure Sports ES models increase that capacity to 24 liters (6.3 gallon), enough for a super-sized adventure.
- ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED SUSPENSION
The Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES and Adventure Sports ES DCT are equipped with electronically controlled SHOWA EERA (Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment) suspension. You can choose between five suspension damper settings: hard, medium, soft and off-road, as well as a customizable “user” setting. It’s easy to switch between them too, so you can choose one for the highway and the other when it’s going to be rougher.
- STEEL FRAME
This second-generation Africa Twin has a frame that’s nearly four pounds lighter than our previous bikes. And while it may be lighter, we’ve refined it by making the steering head more resistant to twisting.
The Africa Twin’s semi-double-cradle frame layout has been proven on countless Honda dirtbikes. It is in principle similar to the design we used on our CRF450R Rally bikes — an engine designed to perform in challenging Dakar rallies and similar events.
- ELECTRICAL PRELOAD ADJUSTER
Changing your shock preload is a snap. Choose from one of four settings: solo, solo with trunk, two-up, and two-up with trunk. Everything is done electrically, so forget about wrenching some hard-to-access shock collars.
- SUSPENSION AHEAD OF LONG TRIP
The Africa Twin doesn’t just look like an adventure bike – it’s the real deal. Exhibit A: Check the long travel front suspension. The fully inverted Showa fork fits a large 45mm tube and 9.1 inches of travel — the most front-end ride in the 1000cc off-road class.
- FOUR PISTON CALIPERS
Up front, the Africa Twin has twin four-piston brake calipers for powerful braking performance. The radial-mount design also helps make them stiffer, improving brake feel and control.
- 43 DEGREE STREET LOCK
With 43 degrees of steering lock both left and right, the Africa Twin provides excellent maneuverability on tight trails. This is one of the reasons why the Africa Twin feels so much more agile than many of the other bigger adventure bikes out there.
- FINE WINGARM
The 2021 Africa Twin Swingarm is light and strong, as it uses technology developed on our CRF450R motocrosser.
- AXLE HOLLOW SHIFT
Africa Twin uses b . hollow steel axle large diameter at the front and rear. They are super strong, durable, but also lightweight: a combination that describes almost everything this bike is associated with.
- SELECTABLE HONDA TORQUE CONTROL
The Africa Twin throttle-by-wire system allows us to offer Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC). You can pinpoint the exact type of power delivery you want for the given conditions. The Honda Selectable Torque Control has seven settings for a variety of conditions, from pavement to fast and loose fire trails to challenging singletracks. You can also turn it off.
- WHEELIE CONTROL
Front and rear wheel speed sensors working with Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) allow you to dial in three levels of wheelie control. There’s also an “off” position – you’re the wheelie control here.
- DRIVE MODE
Both manual transmission and DCT models offer six driving modes: Tour, Urban, Gravel, Off-Road, User 1 and User 2. The latter two allow you to customize the system to your personal preferences.
- TIRES AND WHEELS
Real adventure bikes use spoked wheels because they better survive the dings and hits of off-road riding. All Africa Twin models have a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear for superior performance, especially when it comes to off-road riding.
- TUBELESS TIRES
Standard on our Adventure Sports ES model. Tubeless tires run cooler, and there is a large selection of adventure bike rubbers available today. Get flats? Repairing a flat tire is also much easier.
- HIGHER handlebars
Last year we raised the handlebars 22.5mm higher. That helps open up the cockpit, and works in conjunction with the seat and windshield to give you a more comfortable rider triangle for long days in the saddle.
- Tapered ALUMINUM HANDSCAPES
Another example of attaching premium equipment to the Africa Twin wherever we can, aluminum handlebars are lighter than steel units. The design tapers from the thinner diameter under your grip to the thicker part at the top clamp, and is finely tuned for optimal flexibility and rigidity.
- Narrow chairs
We made a special effort to keep the Africa Twin’s seat narrow. That makes it easier to move around on the bike, and also makes it easier to get your feet on the ground at a traffic light or in a parking lot.
- Narrower REAR SUBFRAME
Two things here: First, the aluminum subframe is removable, to aid in servicing and repairs. Second, we narrowed it down by 40mm last year. That helps the whole bike feel narrower and more agile – a big plus on challenging terrain.
- HEATED HANDLE
Standard on the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES model, this looks like luxury until the first time you really need it. Then never come back.
- Rally TYPE FAIRING
Long-distance riders know there is no substitute for a real fairing, which is why we spent so much time getting the Africa Twin right. It gives you a great balance between wind and weather protection, without being too bulky or top-heavy for a tough off-road ride. are you serious.
- ADJUSTABLE CHAIR
The Africa Twin Adventure Sports model has a two-position adjustment, from 850 to 870mm (33.5 to 34.3 inches) offering an adjustable rider seat. Seat adjustment is quick and positive, and allows the bike to suit a wide range of riders.
- BIAXIAL BALANCE
By using a balancing element on two axes, Honda engineers were able to cancel the primary and clutch vibrations from the engine. The result is that we can mount the engine firmly for superior power and handling, but you still get an amazingly smooth and vibration-free ride.
- ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT POSITION
Adventure riding is an active sport, and that means you need to be able to move on your bike naturally and athletically. The Africa Twin is very narrow where you sit, and the peg-bar seat triangle lets you move up and forward and far back too, for improved handling, especially in demanding trail conditions.
- ADJUSTABLE FRONT WINDOW
Standard on the 2021 Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES model, the five-position windshield offers excellent wind protection, and lets you set up your bike for off-road sections or long road rides. Great for taller and shorter riders. Another Africa Twin model is equipped with a fixed Rally-style windshield.
